Two of the most well-known names in Medical English, Virginia Allum and Ros Wright, came together recently to discuss Ros’s latest course for SLC, Essential Grammar for Healthcare, published earlier this year.
Between them, Virginia, SLC’s Head of Medical English, and Ros have written several Medical English course books that are used by universities, schools and individuals around the world.
Virginia’s publications include Cambridge English for Nursing, The Cambridge Guide to OET Nursing, SLC’s online English for Doctors, Nurses and Care, Medical Terminology and Reach OET B Nursing and Medicine.
Ros’s publications include Good Practice: Communication Skills in English for the Medical Practitioner (Cambridge), English for Medicine in Higher Education Studies (Garnet), English for Nursing (Pearson) and OET Speaking & Writing Skills Builder: Nursing & Medicine (Express).
Essential Grammar for Healthcare is online and so proved a different writing experience for Ros, enabling her to use video, multiple task types, interactive recording, downloads and links to external websites in a way that printed course books don’t allow.
It’s also a grammar course, which is different to other Medical English courses, which tend to focus on functional language and vocabulary rather than have an explicit focus on verb forms.
In this discussion, Virginia draws on her extensive experience writing both for online and print to ask Ros about the writing process, why she wanted to write a grammar book, and how she felt about writing an online course.
