We’re delighted to see that the UK General Medical Council (GMC) now accepts results from OET@Home tests.
Doctors who need to achieve the GMC’s requirements of a Grade B (minimum 350 points) in the four Occupational English test (OET) papers will be able to take OET Medicine from home from September.
This makes the test so much more accessible to doctors around the world who find it difficult to book tests at an OET centre, which may be many miles away or even in another country. It also gives test takers an added degree of reassurance that the test will take place. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many test centres have been closed or are running at greatly reduced capacity.
We work with many doctors who have been waiting to book their OET test so they can work in the UK and elsewhere. This announcement will have great significance for them.
OET@Home is delivered remotely by Prometric, a world leader in technology-enabled testing. Tests are monitored online live by human proctors using a raft of security measures to ensure test validity.
In OET Medicine, the Reading, Listening and Writing papers are delivered on candidates’ computers. Speaking is conducted live with an interlocutor over Zoom.
OET are discussing OET@Home with other regulators, such as the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). We hope very much that they will follow the GMC lead.
Given the great advances in secure, remote, technology-assisted testing and the current uncertainties in test centre availability, we feel this is a major step forward for OET and the many healthcare professionals wanting to take tests and alleviate healthcare shortages in the UK and elsewhere.
