Living and Working in the UK: SLC's NEW course for nurses

Written by Stephanie Lam | Feb 13, 2023

SLC are proud to present our new online course for nurses about to relocate to the UK.

This course is both for healthcare employers of overseas nurses, and for nurses themselves. It’s fully interactive, with eight extensive modules.

The course gives learners a grounding in the basics of living in the UK. It’s also a guide to the essential aspects of working as a nurse within the NHS.

About the course

Course participants get to understand how the NHS works and the role of nurses within it. They’ll also discover the work of the NMC (Nursing & Midwifery Council), and the ongoing training required of a UK-based working nurse.

Learners will also find out the differences between types of UK accents and idiomatic language. They’ll discover more about important aspects of British culture. Basics of life in the UK include public transport, food, the weather, and customs and traditions.

Each bite-sized learning section introduces the learner in a fun way to a different aspect of UK life or nursing work. There’ll be a short video to watch, a section of text to read, or some definitions to work out.

There is then an interactive task. This might be rearranging answers to fill gaps in the text, matching pictures to words, or clicking the correct answer from a list.

Each module is marked, and a percentage score given.

Who the course is for

This course is ideal for nurses who have passed the OET with the right grades to find work in the UK. It fills the gap during the waiting period before starting employment. It also means that as an employer you can rest assured, knowing that your staff have received an orientation to their new working life.

If you’re a nurse, you can buy the course individually and work through it at your own pace. If you’re unsure what’s expected of you as a nurse within the NHS – or of the basics of living in the UK – this is a good place to start.
