Written by Carina Morante | Jan 23, 2024

We’re delighted that the Medical University of Białystok in Poland is using SLC’s Writing for Publication course as the main prize for the Postgraduate Research Showcase 2023/2024 competition for PhD students.

Writing for Publication is an online study course designed for healthcare researchers (and their teachers) who want to publish articles in international journals in English. The course teaches the structure, language and conventions needed to publish, analysing multiple examples and providing tasks to complete throughout.

What’s the competition?

The competition asks 2nd year PhD students at the University’s Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Sciences to write 300-word abstracts for oral presentations lasting 15 minutes. Each presentation must represent the independent research of the student.

The competition is taking place this January with the winners being announced by February 5th. Five winners will all receive access to the Writing for Publication course.

Why Writing for Publication?

Agnieszka Dudzik, English for Medical Purposes trainer and Head of the Foreign Languages Department at the Medical University of Bialystok states this very clearly.

I find the course highly relevant to medical graduates, PhD candidates, and researchers. The content is of practical use for most of them, as it focuses on academic writing skills in subject-specific context. Thus, the programme is very well tailored to meet their needs, which at that point of their education/career are frequently focused on the development of skills required to publish in English. For these reasons, the course would be also beneficial for medical students in years 3-6 seeking to participate in research activities.

Who wrote Writing for Publication?

John Skelton BA MA FRCGP (Hon) is Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Clinical Science at the University of Birmingham. John has published widely in Clinical Communication, Applied Linguistics and related areas, with research published in The Lancet, BMJ, Applied Linguistics and English Language Teaching Journal, amongst many others.

He has taught courses on Writing for Publication to PhD students in many parts of the world and is brilliantly qualified to write a course that is practical, up-to-date and full of impact.
